The recent discovery of Beta Pictoris d, a new exoplanet orbiting the star Beta Pictoris, has once again demonstrated the power of astronomy's long-term observations. This gas giant, with a mass 2.4 times that of Jupiter, is one of the least massive exoplanets ever directly observed from Earth. What makes this discovery even more remarkable is that it was found in archived observations that are over a decade old.
The challenge of photographing planets around bright stars is well-known. Most exoplanets are discovered when they pass in front of their host star, blocking a small fraction of its light. However, direct imaging of planets is a rare feat, with only a few dozen successful detections, often of large, hot worlds. Beta Pictoris d, being cooler and fainter, was a particularly elusive target.
The discovery was made possible by the Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph (ERIS) on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. It was later confirmed with the James Webb Space Telescope. This system now joins HR 8799 as one of the few with more than two directly imaged planets, offering a unique opportunity to study the formation of different types of exoplanets in the same environment.
